Round 1 Markov is cut open by a standing elbow strike. The ref stops the fight. The doctor take a look at the cut and determines Markov can continue. Both fighters begin to exchange Mark catches Petrov with an eye poke. The referee calls time and lets Petrov gather himself. Petrov says he is ok and the fight continues. "The Real Deal" slips a cross from Markov Petrov and lands an uppercut to the liver. Whelan throws a combination of punches ducking and feinting return shots. Whelan smiling with his hands down as he shuffles in and out. Petrov angrily starts missing with haymakers. Markov hits a hook to the body and follows with a power straight that misses. The bell signals the end of round 1.
Round 2 After an exchange of punches, the fighters engage in the clinch. The fighters jockey for position in the clinch. Markov Petrov escapes the clinch and creates some distance. "The Real Deal" presses forward and grazes Markov Petrov with a combo. Markov Petrov wants none of the stand up and clinches with "The Real Deal" to then savagely throw him down to the ground. "The Soviet Superstar" drops a huge strike to Whelans chin, landing into his guard. Petrov takes a risk going for a leglock from being caught in "The Real Deals" guard. It doesn't pay off as "The Real Deal" makes his way to standing. "The Soviet Superstar" feints a takedown attempt and connects with a left hook dropping Whelan. "The Soviet Superstar" dives into guard. Petrov attempts to set in a hammer lock from being caught in the guard. Mark Whelan slips out of it at the last moment. Whelan tries to slide out of guard, but a scramble ensues. Markov Petrov ends up mounted by Whelan. The ref stops the fight as the round comes to an end.
Round 3 "The Soviet Superstar" fakes a takedown attempt and clinches with Whelan. Markov works the clinch to his advantage, carefully connecting with precise strikes. Petrov dodges an uppercut to the chin, though loses his balance and falls to the ground, with "The Real Deal" standing over him. Whelan attempts to drop a fist on Petrov, but misses and lands in his guard. Markov Petrov grabs the arm of Whelan while in guard and holds tight eating shots to ribs. Mark tries to move to half guard but Petrov uses the opportunity to land several strikes and return to full guard. Petrov goes for a kimura from the bottom, but Whelan slips out at the last second. Petrov dodges some ground strikes from Mark, and sends a few back of his own. The bell signals the end of round 3.
Round 4 "The Soviet Superstar" connects with a hard punch making Mark Whelan bring him in to a tight clinch. Petrov lands a powerful uppercut in the clinch. Markov dodges an uppercut to the chin, though loses his balance and falls to the ground, with Mark Whelan standing over him. Whelan attempts to drop a fist on Markov Petrov, but misses and lands in his guard. Whelan drops some good punches while being caught in the guard. "The Soviet Superstar" dodges some ground strikes from Mark Whelan, and sends a few back of his own. Mark Whelan tries to move to half guard but "The Soviet Superstar" uses the opportunity to land several strikes and return to full guard. "The Real Deal" backs out of the guard, and chooses to stand with his opponent, allowing him to his feet. The round comes to an end.
Round 5 A looping right hook from "The Soviet Superstar" sends Mark Whelan to the mat. Petrov stands over "The Real Deal", works his way through his open guard and lands some solid standing punches. "The Real Deal" is able to grab an arm and pull Petrov into his guard. "The Soviet Superstar" takes advantage of a mental laps from Mark Whelan and moves into full mount. Whelan gives his back up trying to escape the mount. Markov tries to set in a rear naked choke, but can't quite finish it. Markov Petrov begins to look for a rear naked choke, but Mark rolls to being mounted instead. The bell signals the end of round 5.
